Shankaracharya was one of the most influential philosophers of early medieval India and played a major role in the revival and systematisation of Brahmanical thought. He is generally placed in the eighth century CE and is traditionally associated with Kerala. His philosophical ideas, particularly Advaita Vedanta or the doctrine of non-dualism, profoundly influenced Indian intellectual and religious life. His work is important for understanding the religious and philosophical developments of the period between c.750 and 1206. Shankaracharya developed and systematised the Advaita interpretation of the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita and the Brahma Sutras. According to Advaita Vedanta, the ultimate reality is Brahman, which is infinite, eternal, changeless and without any attributes.
