Question
Pelagic Deposits.
Answer :
Word Count : 666
Pelagic deposits are fine-grained marine sediments that accumulate in the deep ocean, far away from continental margins, generally at depths greater than 2000 meters. They cover nearly three-fourths of the ocean floor and represent one of the most important components of deep-sea sedimentation. Due to their slow rate of accumulation, often only a few millimeters per thousand years, pelagic deposits preserve valuable information about past climatic, oceanographic, and biological conditions. They consist mainly of microscopic remains of marine organisms and fine inorganic particles transported over long distances. Pelagic deposits are broadly classified into two major categories: pelagic oozes and red clays. The classification depends on the proportion of biogenic material present. If more than 30 percent of the sediment consists of the skeletal remains of marine organisms, the deposit is termed pelagic ooze. When the biogenic content is less than 30 percent, the deposit is classified as red clay. Pelagic oozes are biogenic sediments formed from the shells and skeletons of microscopic marine organisms.
