The National Health Policy (NHP) 2017 is an important framework of the Government of India that aims to improve the health status of the population and ensure universal access to quality health-care services. It was approved by the Union Cabinet on 15 March 2017 and replaced the National Health Policy of 2002. The policy recognizes health as an essential component of human development and focuses on providing preventive, promotive, curative, rehabilitative, and palliative health services. From the perspective of Nursing Foundation, the policy is particularly important because nurses are central to primary health care, health education, disease prevention, maternal and child health, community participation, and delivery of essential health services. One of the key elements of the National Health Policy 2017 is the provision of universal health coverage. The policy seeks to ensure that everyone receives quality health services without suffering financial hardship. It emphasizes access to preventive, promotive, curative, rehabilitative, and palliative care. Health services should be available to all sections of society, particularly vulnerable and disadvantaged populations. Nurses have an important role in achieving universal health coverage because they provide direct care in hospitals, health centres, schools, communities, and homes. The policy gives major importance to strengthening the public health system. It seeks to improve the availability, accessibility, affordability, and quality of public health services. Greater attention is given to primary health care and the strengthening of health and wellness services at the community level. Primary health care is considered the foundation of an effective health system. Nurses working in primary health centres, sub-centres, community health centres, and other health facilities contribute significantly to immunization, antenatal care, postnatal care, family planning, health education, nutrition services, and disease prevention. Another important element is the emphasis on preventive and promotive health care rather than depending mainly on treatment of diseases. The policy promotes healthy lifestyles and addresses risk factors such as tobacco use, alcohol consumption, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and environmental hazards.
