The relationship between human beings and the environment has always been an important part of history. Human societies depend on nature for food, water, land, forests, minerals, and other resources. At the same time, human activities change the natural environment. During medieval India, this relationship became particularly significant because agriculture expanded, settlements grew, forests were cleared, irrigation systems developed, and trade and industries increased. The medieval period witnessed considerable interaction between people and their physical surroundings. Rulers, peasants, pastoral communities, forest dwellers, traders, artisans, and religious groups interacted with the environment in different ways. Their relationship with nature was not always the same. While some activities resulted in environmental degradation, others involved careful management and conservation of natural resources. ## Agriculture and the Environment Agriculture was the main occupation of a large part of the medieval Indian population. Consequently, the availability of fertile land and water strongly influenced settlement patterns and economic activities. Farmers cultivated crops according to local soil, rainfall, temperature, and water availability. The expansion of agriculture required the transformation of natural landscapes. Forests and uncultivated areas were sometimes cleared to bring new land under cultivation. As agricultural settlements expanded, villages became important centres of economic and social life. Different regions developed different agricultural practices according to their environmental conditions. Areas receiving adequate rainfall could depend more heavily on rain-fed agriculture, whereas dry regions required irrigation and water-storage systems. ## Irrigation and Water Management Water was one of the most important natural resources during medieval India. Irrigation enabled agriculture to expand into areas where rainfall alone was insufficient. Wells, tanks, canals, reservoirs, and other water-management structures were developed in different regions. The construction of irrigation works often required collective labour as well as the involvement of local authorities and rulers. In southern India, tanks and reservoirs played an important role in agricultural production. In northern India, wells and canals were also used for irrigation.
