Answer :
Word Count : 482
The Five-Year Plans were introduced in the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin to transform Russia from a predominantly agrarian economy into a powerful industrial state. Between 1929 and 1941, the first three Five-Year Plans brought about rapid industrialisation through centralised economic planning, state ownership, compulsory targets and mobilisation of labour and resources. The First Five-Year Plan (1928–1932) concentrated mainly on the development of heavy industries. The Soviet government gave priority to coal, iron, steel, electricity, machinery and engineering rather than consumer goods. Huge industrial projects such as the Dnieper Hydroelectric Station, Magnitogorsk steel complex and new industrial centres were established. Coal production expanded in the Donbas region, while the development of the Kuznetsk Basin created another major industrial area.
