All editors must necessarily read the matter they edit but editors of scientific matter must R E A D it: they must record, examine, arrange, and document. Before you begin to edit, make sure that what you are editing is complete: if the text mentions three tables, make sure you have those three tables; if the text mentions, or cites, sources of information, make sure that adequate details of the source (title, author. and publisher if the source is a book and the correct URL if the source is a web page, for example). Besides, it is useful to note the date on which you received the matter for editing. the number of pages, filename, file size, and so on. That is what we usually refer to as housekeeping.
