Gandhi's Reformist Programme

As we saw, Gandhi’s reformist programme was far more comprehensive than that of any of his predecessors. Though more conservative than some of them in certain matters, especially the social, he was far more radical in most others. He was convinced that Hindu society needed moral regeneration, a ‘new system of ethics’, a new yugadharma. He was certain that the new yuga dharma could not be developed out of the available resources of Hindu tradition alone. Some of its fundamental values were sound and represented its great contribution to mankind. However, they had been traditionally defined in negative, passive and asocial terms and required reinterpretation and reform. Hinduism could, therefore, greatly benefit from the moral ‘insights’ and ‘truths’ discovered by other religious tradi tions including Buddhism, Jainism, Judaism, Islam and, especially, Christianity, and by such writers as Tolstoy, Ruskin and Thoreau.

Gaxidhi could not reform the Hindu tradition and open it up to the influences of others without radically redefining, that is, deconstructing and reconstructing the orthodox conception of tradition in general, and of the Hindu tradition in particular. He had so to define the latter that it allowed the kind of cross- cultural borrowing he had in mind, and so to define other traditions that he was not accused of violating their integrity by selecting specific aspects. He also needed to show that different traditions were commensurable, concerned to answer similar questions, and that they had something to offer to each other.
