Aggression was formally defined by social psychologists in the early 1990s as actions or behavior with the intent to cause harm to another in the specific case in which the other person does not welcome the harm. Clearly, scenario one is some sort of contact ball game (maybe football) and is not an expression of true aggression. However, scenario two does appear to be an example of people behaving aggressively toward others.

Social Causes of Aggression

Just as we pick up our accents from those around us as we grow up, we also learn appropriate behavioral responses to situations from witnessing how adults in our life respond to those events. If we grow up in an environment where aggressive responses (like punching walls in anger) are the norm, we're much more likely to exhibit these same responses as adults. So learned behavior is the most significant of the social causes of aggression.

Another social cause of aggression stems from a psychosocial phenomenon called deindividuation. This is the tendency for people to behave differently in a crowd than they would normally on their own because they lose their sense of self and individuality to the group.
