Explain the trends of urbanization in developed and developing countries. Describe four major issues and challenges of urbanization.

Urbanization is a new trend throughout the world. Over the span of nine decades since 1900, the worlds population trebled from 2 billion to 6 billion, but the urban population increased more rapidly from 2.4 million to 2.9 billion in 2000 and is expected to rise to 5 billion by 2030.

Urbanization in Developed Countries:

Prior to 1950, the majority of urbanization occurred in developed countries. Rapid urbanization took place during the period of industrialization in Europe and North America in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

1. Urban Sprawl:

Urban sprawl or real expansion of the cities, both in population and geographical area, of rapidly growing cities is the root cause of urban problems. In most cities the economic base is incapable of dealing with the problems created by their excessive size. Massive immigration from rural areas as well as from small towns into big cities has taken place almost consistently; thereby adding to the size of cities.
