Explain the strategies for sustainable agriculture management

Desirable strategies for sustainable agricultural management are -

1. Promotion of crop production

(a) Agricultural credit Transfer of technology to farmers depends on the timely availability of inputs including credit. Adequate credit needs to be provided to farmers, particularly to marginal, small-scale and female farmers. Institutional constraints to timely sanctioning of credit have to be removed.

(b) Ensuring fair prices for products The price support policy for providing fair prices should be enhanced. In that connection, a crop insurance policy could be adopted. Price support could also be provided to the farmers for an increase in the production of exportable agricultural commodities.

(c) Stimulating minor irrigation Sufficient irrigation devices, particularly minor irrigation equipment, should be made available to the farmers.

(d) Accelerating location specific research Emphasis should be given to short-term, location-specific research which would involve the rapid screening of local and improved varieties, and the development of production practices.

(e) Crop diversification Measures to diversify crops should be taken to improve the production of minor crops such as pulses, oilseeds, vegetables, fruit and spices. Farmers should be given incentives to bring more land under cultivation for minor crops.
