Agriculture has historically been the backbone of the Indian economy, and even today it sustains a large proportion of the population through direct and indirect employment. The growth of agribusiness, which encompasses activities from input supply to production, processing, marketing, and distribution, is deeply influenced by the policies formulated at the national and state levels. These policies not only ensure food security and rural livelihoods but also integrate Indian agriculture with global markets and help in generating value addition across supply chains. In India, agribusiness policies address various areas such as input management, pricing, infrastructure, credit, technology adoption, trade facilitation, and sustainability, which collectively drive the transformation of agriculture from subsistence farming to a more market-oriented and competitive enterprise. One of the key roles of policy in promoting agricultural growth is the provision of price support through mechanisms such as the Minimum Support Price (MSP). MSP ensures that farmers receive a guaranteed price for their produce, thereby protecting them from market fluctuations and exploitation by middlemen. Alongside MSP, procurement policies and public distribution systems contribute to food security and stabilize markets. In addition to pricing policies, the government emphasizes input subsidies for fertilizers, seeds, irrigation, and electricity, which reduce the cost burden on farmers and encourage them to adopt improved farming practices.
