Haemoglobin estimation is an important procedure in physiological anthropology because haemoglobin concentration provides information about the oxygen-carrying capacity of blood and helps in assessing nutritional status, anaemia, adaptation to altitude, and general health. Haemoglobin is the iron-containing pigment present in red blood cells that transports oxygen from the lungs to body tissues. Several methods are available for its estimation, among which the Sahli’s acid haematin method is a simple and commonly described method for anthropological and field studies. In Sahli’s method, a Sahli haemoglobinometer is used. The apparatus consists of a graduated haemoglobin tube, a comparator containing coloured standards, a haemoglobin pipette, a glass stirring rod, dilute hydrochloric acid, and distilled water.
