The process of state formation under the Rajputs was marked by a distinctive blend of indigenous political traditions, warrior ethics, kinship networks, and regional dynamics. Between the 7th and 12th centuries CE, especially in northern and western India, several powerful Rajput kingdoms emerged, playing a crucial role in the post-Gupta political landscape of India. The political structure developed by the Rajputs was decentralized in many respects, characterized by fragmented sovereignty, martial values, land-based power structures, and a feudal-like organization. The Rajputs, as a social and political class, were primarily warrior aristocrats who claimed Kshatriya status. Their origin is debated—some sources describe them as descendants of ancient royal lineages (Suryavanshi, Chandravanshi, Agnivanshi), while others suggest that many of them rose to prominence from local tribes or military groups that were assimilated into the Kshatriya fold during the early medieval period. Regardless of their origins, Rajput rulers established multiple dynasties such as the Pratiharas, Paramaras, Chauhans, Chandelas, Gahadavalas, and others. One of the most defining features of Rajput state formation was its basis in kinship and clan loyalty. Rajput polity was deeply rooted in clan-based organization. The clan (kula or vansh) was the nucleus around which political authority was exercised.
