Climate change is influenced by both natural and anthropogenic (human-induced) factors. While recent global warming is predominantly driven by human activities, it is essential to understand the natural drivers that have historically influenced Earth’s climate over geological timescales. These natural drivers include variations in solar radiation, volcanic activity, Earth's orbital changes, ocean circulation patterns, and natural greenhouse gas fluctuations. Together, these factors have caused significant climatic shifts, such as ice ages and interglacial periods, long before human influence began. One of the most fundamental natural drivers of climate change is solar variability. The Sun is the primary source of energy for Earth's climate system. Changes in solar output can directly affect global temperatures. Although the Sun’s energy output is relatively constant, it does vary slightly in cycles, such as the 11-year solar sunspot cycle. Another important natural driver is volcanic activity. Large volcanic eruptions can inject vast amounts of ash and sulfur dioxide (SO₂) into the stratosphere, forming sulfate aerosols that reflect solar radiation and cool the Earth’s surface.
