Agricultural extension organisations function as dynamic systems that connect research institutions, government agencies, and farming communities with the objective of transferring technology, improving farm productivity, and enhancing rural livelihoods. Effective management of such organisations is essential because extension work involves planning programs, coordinating field staff, mobilising community participation, managing resources, and evaluating outcomes. Several management theories provide conceptual frameworks for organising and administering extension services efficiently. Among these, the classical management theories of Frederick Taylor and Henri Fayol, and the human relations perspective represented by McGregor’s Theory X and Theory Y, have significant relevance to extension management. Frederick Winslow Taylor, known as the father of scientific management, emphasized efficiency and productivity through scientific analysis of work. His theory emerged during the industrial revolution but has implications for extension organisations, particularly in improving operational efficiency and accountability. Taylor proposed that work should be studied scientifically to determine the one best way of performing a task. He advocated time and motion studies to analyse job performance, standardisation of tools and procedures, scientific selection and training of workers, and a clear division of responsibility between management and workers. In extension organisations, Taylor’s principles can be applied in planning and implementing field activities. For example, extension supervisors can analyse the time required for farm visits, demonstration setups, or training sessions to ensure optimal utilisation of staff time. Standardised guidelines for conducting farmer meetings, demonstrations, and data collection help maintain uniformity and quality across different regions. Scientific selection and training of extension personnel ensure that only qualified and competent individuals are recruited and properly trained to deliver advisory services.
