Education in the twenty-first century faces numerous challenges due to rapid technological advancement, globalization, social diversity, and the growing demand for lifelong learning. In order to respond to these challenges, the UNESCO appointed the International Commission on Education for the Twenty-first Century under the chairmanship of Jacques Delors. The Commission presented its report titled Learning: The Treasure Within, in which it proposed a comprehensive vision of education built upon four fundamental pillars. These four pillars of education—Learning to Know, Learning to Do, Learning to Live Together, and Learning to Be—provide a holistic framework for organizing educational policies, curricula, and learning processes. They are especially significant in the management of distance education because they guide the development of learner-centered, flexible, and meaningful educational experiences. The first pillar, Learning to Know, refers to the acquisition of knowledge and the development of intellectual abilities. It emphasizes mastering the instruments of understanding rather than merely accumulating information. In the context of modern education systems, the amount of available knowledge is enormous and constantly expanding. Therefore, learners cannot simply memorize facts; they must learn how to learn. This pillar focuses on developing curiosity, critical thinking, reasoning ability, and intellectual discipline.
