This process has gained significant attention for the extraction of metals such as copper, gold, uranium, and nickel from low-grade ores and industrial waste. The bioleaching process primarily involves two types of microorganisms: chemolithotrophic bacteria and heterotrophic microorganisms. Chemolithotrophic bacteria, such as *Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans* and *Leptospirillum ferrooxidans*, derive energy from the oxidation of inorganic compounds like ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) or sulfide minerals. These bacteria play a pivotal role in the leaching of sulfide ores, including chalcopyrite (CuFeS₂), pentlandite ((Ni,Fe)₉S₈), and sphalerite (ZnS). Heterotrophic microorganisms, on the other hand, can produce organic acids, which aid in the solubilization of metals from oxide or silicate ores. For example, *Aspergillus niger* and *Penicillium simplicissimum* produce citric or gluconic acids that facilitate the extraction of metals like zinc and uranium. The bioleaching process can be categorized into two main types: direct and indirect mechanisms. In direct bioleaching, microorganisms attach themselves to the surface of metal sulfide ores and oxidize the mineral directly. This oxidation leads to the formation of soluble metal ions and sulfuric acid, which further promotes metal solubilization.
