Eccentricity refers to the shape of Earth’s orbit around the Sun, varying from more circular to more elliptical over a cycle of approximately 100,000 years. When the orbit is more elliptical, the difference in distance between Earth’s perihelion (closest approach to the Sun) and aphelion (farthest distance from the Sun) becomes more pronounced. This variation affects the total amount of solar radiation the Earth receives annually.

In a nearly circular orbit, seasonal contrasts are moderate, whereas in a highly elliptical orbit, Earth receives more solar radiation during perihelion and less during aphelion. The timing of perihelion and aphelion within the annual cycle determines whether summer or winter is more intense in each hemisphere. Therefore, eccentricity affects the magnitude of seasonal insolation differences.

Obliquity

Obliquity describes the angle of Earth's axial tilt relative to the plane of its orbit around the Sun. Currently, this tilt is about 23.5°, but it varies between 22.1° and 24.5° over a 41,000-year cycle. A greater tilt amplifies the seasonal contrast between summer and winter, especially at higher latitudes.
