Merton’s Strain Theory, developed by American sociologist Robert K. Merton, is a fundamental concept in understanding deviance and criminal behavior from a sociological perspective. It forms part of the structural functionalist framework and argues that deviance arises when there is a disjunction between culturally prescribed goals and the socially structured means to achieve them.
