Merton’s Strain Theory, developed by American sociologist Robert K. Merton, is a fundamental concept in understanding deviance and criminal behavior from a sociological perspective. It forms part of the structural functionalist framework and argues that deviance arises when there is a disjunction between culturally prescribed goals and the socially structured means to achieve them. In the context of criminal justice and social work, Merton’s theory is crucial in identifying the societal pressures that contribute to criminal behavior, especially in unequal societies. In the Indian context, where social stratification, poverty, caste-based exclusion, and unemployment are deeply rooted, the theory provides significant insights into understanding why individuals or groups may resort to deviance or crime. Merton suggested that society sets culturally approved goals (such as financial success, education, upward mobility), but access to legitimate means (education, employment opportunities, fair treatment) is not equally available to all members of society. When individuals are unable to achieve these goals through legitimate means, they may experience "strain," which leads them to adapt in different ways. Merton identified five modes of individual adaptation to this strain: Conformity, Innovation, Ritualism, Retreatism, and Rebellion. Each mode reflects a different response to the gap between goals and means. 1. Conformity: This is the most common mode of adaptation, where individuals accept both the cultural goals and the institutionalized means of achieving them. They strive to succeed within the boundaries set by society, even when it is difficult. In India, the majority of the middle and lower-middle-class populations continue to value education and hard work as the legitimate paths to success, despite challenges like reservation politics, unemployment, and corruption. For example, many students from rural or economically backward areas prepare for competitive exams like UPSC or state PSCs with minimal resources, following the accepted legal and institutional path to achieve upward mobility. From a social work and criminal justice perspective, such individuals are typically not the focus of criminal interventions, but social ___ _____ _________ _________ ______ ___ ____ _______ _____.
