The exponential expansion of mineral extraction since the nineteenth century has been closely linked with the increasing use of fossil fuels. Coal, petroleum, and natural gas have transformed mining from a labor-intensive activity into a highly mechanized and energy-intensive industry capable of extracting minerals from greater depths, larger areas, and lower-grade ore deposits. In the environmental history of the Indian subcontinent, fossil fuels not only powered industrialization but also reshaped landscapes, labor systems, ecological relationships, and patterns of resource governance. The extraction of minerals and fossil fuels became mutually reinforcing processes, creating a cycle of expanding industrial demand and increasing environmental transformation. Before the widespread use of fossil fuels, mineral extraction in the Indian subcontinent was relatively localized and dependent on human labor, animal power, and renewable energy sources such as wood and charcoal. Ancient and medieval mining activities focused on iron, copper, gold, lead, zinc, and precious stones. Although these activities sometimes caused local environmental degradation, the scale of extraction remained limited by technological constraints and the availability of energy. Mines were generally shallow, transportation was slow, and production was directed toward regional markets. The Industrial Revolution fundamentally altered this pattern. Coal emerged as the principal source of energy for steam engines, railways, foundries, and factories. Fossil fuels provided the enormous quantities of energy necessary to operate pumps, drilling machines, crushers, ventilation systems, and transportation networks. As a result, mines could extend deeper underground, process larger volumes of ore, and sustain continuous production throughout the year. Energy availability became one of the primary determinants of mining expansion. In the Indian subcontinent, coal mining itself became one of the earliest examples of fossil fuel-driven mineral extraction.
