The nature of population growth in colonial India was shaped by the interaction of economic change, public health conditions, agricultural performance, state policies, and demographic transitions. Between the eighteenth century and 1947, India's population did not grow in a smooth or uniform manner. Instead, it experienced long phases of stagnation interrupted by periods of recovery and acceleration. Historians and demographers have broadly divided colonial population trends into three phases: a period of uncertain or slow growth up to the late nineteenth century, a phase of fluctuating growth accompanied by high mortality between the 1880s and the early twentieth century, and a phase of relatively rapid population increase after the 1920s. These demographic changes had profound implications for the colonial economy, labour markets, land relations, and living standards. Reliable estimates of India's population before the first regular census are difficult because systematic demographic records were absent. Population figures for the eighteenth century are based on indirect estimates drawn from revenue records, travellers' accounts, and regional studies. Frequent wars, political instability during the decline of the Mughal Empire, epidemics, and localized famines prevented sustained population growth. The East India Company's expansion also disrupted traditional economic structures, although its demographic impact varied across regions. The introduction of decennial censuses beginning in 1881 marked a turning point in the collection of demographic information. Earlier censuses of 1872 were incomplete and non-synchronous, but from 1881 onward the government generated increasingly reliable data. Census figures revealed that India had a large but slowly growing population characterized by exceptionally high birth rates and equally high death rates. This demographic pattern corresponded to the first stage of the demographic transition, where natural increase remained low because high fertility was offset by high mortality. One of the defining characteristics of colonial India's population growth was the persistence of high mortality. Death rates remained among the highest in the world due to recurrent famines, epidemics, poor sanitation, malnutrition, and inadequate medical facilities.
