The Code on Social Security, 2020 is one of the four labour codes enacted by the Government of India to consolidate and simplify numerous labour laws related to social security. It replaces and merges several existing laws, including the Employees' Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952, the Employees' State Insurance Act, 1948, the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961, the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972, and others. The primary objective of the Code is to provide comprehensive social security benefits to workers in both the organized and unorganized sectors while ensuring ease of compliance for employers. A significant feature of the Code is its wider coverage. It extends social security provisions to unorganized workers, gig workers, platform workers, fixed-term employees, inter-state migrant workers, and self-employed persons. This is an important development because earlier labour laws mainly focused on workers in the organized sector.
