Examine Rousseau’s critique of Enlightenment

Jean-Jacques Rousseau, an influential philosopher of the 18th century, offered a significant critique of the Enlightenment, despite being one of its key figures. Rousseau's critique centered on the negative consequences he believed the Enlightenment had on society, particularly in terms of its impact on human nature, inequality, and the loss of authentic human connection. In his works, Rousseau argued that the Enlightenment's emphasis on reason, progress, and individualism had led to the erosion of important social bonds and the emergence of a fragmented and unequal society.

One of Rousseau's main criticisms of the Enlightenment was its view of human nature. While Enlightenment thinkers such as Thomas Hobbes and John Locke emphasized the rational and self-interested nature of humans, Rousseau posited a different understanding. In his work "Discourse on the Origin and Basis of Inequality Among Men," Rousseau argued that humans were originally in a state of natural freedom and equality. However, the advent of civilization, the development of private property, and the emergence of social hierarchies led to the corruption of human nature.

Rousseau contended that the Enlightenment's emphasis on reason and progress had contributed to the erosion of authentic human connections and the loss of communal bonds. He criticized the focus on individualism and self-interest, arguing that it had led to the breakdown of social cohesion and the alienation of individuals from one another. In his work "The Social Contract," Rousseau proposed the idea of the general will, which represented the collective interests and common good of society. He believed that true freedom and social harmony __________ _________ ______ _____ ___.
