The evolution of Indian publishing is closely connected with the development of education, literature, journalism, printing technology, language, and intellectual life in the country. Publishing in India has passed through several stages, beginning with the transmission of knowledge through oral traditions and manuscripts, followed by the introduction of the printing press, the growth of newspapers and books during the colonial period, the expansion of publishing after independence, and the emergence of digital and electronic publishing in the contemporary period. Each stage has brought changes in the production, distribution, marketing, ownership, and legal regulation of published material. Before the arrival of printing technology, knowledge in India was largely preserved and circulated through oral traditions and handwritten manuscripts. Religious scriptures, philosophical works, literary compositions, scientific knowledge, and historical accounts were transmitted from one generation to another. Manuscripts were written on materials such as palm leaves, birch bark, cloth, and paper. Buddhist, Jain, Hindu, Persian, and other scholarly traditions contributed significantly to manuscript culture. Centres of learning and religious institutions played an important role in copying, preserving, and distributing texts. Although manuscript production was valuable, it was slow, expensive, and limited in reach because each copy had to be prepared individually. The introduction of the printing press marked a major turning point in Indian publishing. Printing technology was introduced in India during the sixteenth century, particularly through Portuguese missionaries in Goa. The establishment of printing facilities made it possible to reproduce texts in larger numbers and with greater consistency.
