# Factors Responsible for Maintaining Normal Lactation Lactation is the physiological process by which the mammary glands produce and secrete breast milk after childbirth. Normal lactation is essential for the nutrition, growth, immunity and psychological development of the newborn. Successful lactation depends on the coordinated action of the breasts, endocrine hormones, nervous system, maternal health and effective suckling by the baby. The process begins during pregnancy and continues after delivery when hormonal changes stimulate milk production and regular removal of milk maintains secretion. The important factors responsible for maintaining normal lactation are as follows: 1. Hormonal regulation: Hormones play the most important role in the initiation and maintenance of lactation. During pregnancy, estrogen and progesterone stimulate the growth and development of the mammary glands. After delivery, the sudden fall in estrogen and progesterone permits prolactin to act on the mammary alveolar cells and initiate milk production. Prolactin, secreted by the anterior pituitary gland, is primarily responsible for milk synthesis. Every time the baby suckles, sensory impulses travel from the nipple to the hypothalamus, resulting in increased prolactin secretion. Regular suckling therefore helps maintain milk production.
