PERT and CPM assist management in identifying the longest time-consuming, or consuming path through a network of tasks or activities as a basis for planning, executing, and controlling a project. The techniques help managers to optimize the longest time duration in order to minimize the total project cost and time. These tools help the project manager by guiding him/her through many stages of project management. The techniques are mathematically simplified and give critical path and slack time, provide project documentation and are very useful in monitoring project costs.
