Machiavelli’s Classification of Government

Niccol Machiavelli, best known for The Prince, describes the "various kinds of states" in

a way that is similar to Plato's, but differs in some important ways. Plato's description (at

left) is a simulation of how his ideal state, the Aristocracy of Philosophers, would

devolve. His description is generational, with unworthy children failing to pass on their

parents' virtues. Thus, the Timarchy is created by children who value themselves solely

on the basis of their honour and ability to use force, the Oligarchy is created by children

who decide to use their force to become wealthy, the Democracy is created by children

who believe they have a right to that wealth simply because they are citizens, and the

Tyranny is created by children whose total lack of discipline and restraint creates chaos

that can only be ended by one of their number seizing personal power. The tyrant, like his

generation before him, abuses his power to get whatever he wants. Plato's description is

psychologically accurate for many historical events and people.

Machiavelli's description is generational as well, but it also introduces a new principle,

which leads to a conclusion that differs from Plato's. Machiavelli's principle is simply one

of classification based on the distribution of power, i.e. power is exercised by one, a few,

or the many. This is a useful device that is used in the theory of Three-Dimensional

Liberties. Thus, a Monarchy is a Monarchy, an Aristocracy is an Aristocracy, and a
