### Does India have a historical tradition of social protection? India has a long and diverse historical tradition of social protection, although its meaning, institutional form and coverage have changed considerably over time. Social protection refers to measures that protect individuals and households against poverty, economic insecurity, illness, old age, disability, unemployment and other social risks. In the Indian context, such protection was historically embedded in family structures, community institutions, religious practices, customary arrangements and systems of charity rather than being provided primarily by a modern welfare state. Over time, these traditional arrangements were supplemented and gradually replaced by state-led programmes, especially after independence. The evolution of social protection in India can therefore be understood as a movement from informal and community-based support towards rights-based and state-supported systems. In ancient India, social protection was closely connected with the family, community, occupation and religious institutions. The joint family system played an important role in providing economic security to children, widows, elderly persons and people unable to work. Members of an extended household generally shared resources and responsibilities, creating a form of informal social insurance. Women, particularly widows and unmarried women, could receive support from the wider family, although their economic dependence was also a major source of vulnerability. The nature of protection was therefore closely linked to social status, gender and caste. Religious and charitable traditions also contributed to social protection. Concepts such as dana, charity and social duty encouraged wealthier members of society to support poor people, travellers, religious institutions and vulnerable groups. Buddhist and Jain traditions also placed considerable emphasis on compassion, charity and care for disadvantaged people.
