Political Thought can be philosophical, or realistic or even radical.

If it is philosophical, it is called a political philosophy

Political Philosophy: It is the study of philosophical foundations of Political Science. It is primarily concerned with moral and ethical dimensions of politics

It deals with ‘what ought to be’. It deals with good, virtuous and ideal. Again, please remember, that political philosophy is surrounding the state.

Political Science had its origins in Philosophy. It began, when philosophers started dwelling about the affairs of the state. They began with the ideas of justice, education which were essential components of a political life.

The word “philosophy” is from the Greek root words “philo” and “sophos”. Philo means love and sophos means wisdom or knowledge. Philosophy in general is a quest for wisdom. A search for the Truth. Similarly, Political Philosophy is a quest for the true nature of various political ideals. So, mostly, political philosophy is hypothetical than actual. It is more idealistic than being real.
