The Universal Immunization Programme (UIP) is one of the major public health programmes of the Government of India. It was launched in 1985 by expanding the earlier Expanded Programme on Immunization and aims to provide free vaccination to all eligible beneficiaries, particularly pregnant women, infants and children. The programme is an important component of primary health care because immunization prevents several serious communicable diseases, reduces childhood illness and deaths, and contributes to improved community health.
