Today, urbanization is a global phenomenon, but its pace, nature, and consequences vary widely between developed and developing countries. Understanding these differences is essential to address the challenges and opportunities created by urban growth. The trends of urbanization in developed countries reflect a long historical process. In Europe, North America, and parts of East Asia, urbanization began during the Industrial Revolution in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The shift from agrarian to industrial economies led to the growth of urban centers where factories, commerce, and services were concentrated. In these countries, urbanization has largely stabilized, with high percentages of populations already living in urban areas. For example, countries such as the United States, Japan, and Germany have more than 75% of their populations in urban areas. Urban growth in these regions is relatively slow, and cities often expand through suburbanization and the development of metropolitan regions. Moreover, urban areas in developed countries are characterized by advanced infrastructure, well-established transport networks, technological integration, and planned urban management systems. Although population growth is limited, issues such as aging populations, economic restructuring, and environmental sustainability dominate the urbanization agenda.
