Solid waste is one of the most significant environmental concerns in today’s world due to increasing population, industrialization, and urbanization. Solid waste refers to discarded materials arising from human activities that are no longer useful or required. These wastes, if not managed properly, lead to pollution of land, water, and air and adversely affect both ecosystems and human health. Environmental biotechnology plays a vital role in the treatment, management, and safe disposal of solid waste by developing biological methods for recycling, resource recovery, and detoxification. For better management, solid waste is studied in terms of its sources, classification, and hazardous potential. Along with this, an important focus of environmental biotechnology lies in understanding how xenobiotics, which are foreign compounds not naturally found in nature, can be biodegraded through microbial and enzymatic pathways. Solid waste can be classified based on origin, hazardous potential, and content. In terms of origin, the primary sources include domestic, industrial, commercial, agricultural, biomedical, and construction and demolition waste. Domestic or municipal solid waste arises from households and consists of food waste, paper, plastics, glass, metals, textiles, and inert materials. Industrial solid waste is generated from manufacturing and processing industries, such as chemical, metallurgical, textile, and food processing industries. These wastes often contain hazardous chemicals, heavy metals, and process residues. Commercial waste originates from shops, offices, and markets and is usually composed of packaging materials, plastics, and paper.
