The classic aetiological text concerning the origin of the caste system is the celebrated Purusa-Sukta myth, Hymn 10.90 of the Rgveda. Purusa is Brahmanical version of the primeval gigantic man from whose body all that is, came to be.  Purusa is described as having a thousand heads and a thousand feet; he also emanated Viraj, the female creative principle.
