The President of India is the constitutional head of the Indian Union and occupies the highest office in the administrative system at the Union level. The office of the President is established under Article 52 of the Constitution of India. Although the President is the nominal executive authority, the real executive power is exercised by the Council of Ministers headed by the Prime Minister. However, the President plays a crucial role in maintaining constitutional governance, ensuring continuity of administration, and functioning as the guardian of the Constitution. The executive powers of the President are extensive. Article 53 provides that the executive power of the Union is vested in the President and is exercised either directly or through officers subordinate to him. All executive actions of the Government of India are carried out in the name of the President. The President appoints the Prime Minister and, on the advice of the Prime Minister, appoints other ministers of the Union Council of Ministers. The President also appoints important constitutional authorities such as the Chief Justice and judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners, the Chairman and members of the Union Public Service Commission, Governors of states, and other high officials. As the supreme commander of the Indian Armed Forces, the President has powers relating to defence administration.
