Discuss the play Macbeth as a tragedy.

The play is written by an English playwright but is situated in Scotland, not England. We must keep in mind the parallel between the Scottish claim for kingship and its relevance to the political climate of England.The play begins on an ominous note with thunder and lightning. These signal the advent of the witches in an open place. A play that deals with the world of kings and queens begins within a social space that is beyond the purview of normative society. It presents a kind of ambiguity that develops into equivocation; a recurrent theme in the play.
