Discuss the need for ethical behaviour in social work.

The social work profession is the epitome of both integrity and ethics. Although the majority of social workers display ideal ethics and the nature of the career tends to attract the most compassionate and principled individuals, there is a small minority that engage in behavior that is considered to be unethical. The NASW (National Association of Social Workers) Code of Ethics emphasizes that the core of any type of social work revolves around professional ethics. The mission of the social work profession is rooted in a set of six core values. It is somewhat of a map that guides each social worker’s journey and is important to all social workers regardless of working conditions. These core values serve as the root for all social workers and if followed properly will ensure that each and every social worker remain highly ethical in any situation that they may face. These core values are: (1) Service, (2) Social Justice, (3) Dignity and worth of the person, (4) Importance of Human relationships, (5) Integrity, and (6) Competence.

The NASW states that “the mission of the social work profession is rooted in a set of core values” 

The core values are:

Service (Ethical principle: Help people in need and address social problems)

The primary goal of this profession is addressing societal issues and helping communities as well as individuals. Social workers elevate the needs of others above their personal interests and use all resources available to them to serve their clients.

Social justice (Ethical principle: Social workers challenge social injustice)

This field is based on the concept of advocating for the oppressed, the voiceless, and everyone else unable to advocate for themselves. Social workers deal with issues ranging from poverty and homelessness to racial oppression, sexual discrimination and other injustices.

Dignity and the worth of the person (Ethical principle: Social workers respect the inherent dignity and worth of the person)
