Discuss the nature of chiefdoms which evolved in Tamilakam in the early 20 historic period.

Tamilakam  refers to the geographical region inhabited by the ancient Tamil people. Tamilakam covered today's Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, Lakshadweep and southern parts of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Traditional accounts and Tolkāppiyam referred these territories as a single cultural area, where Tamil was the natural language[note  and culture of all people . The ancient Tamil country was divided into kingdoms.

The chiefdoms of Tamilakam is almost entirely based on the Tamil heroic literature. That is very well justified, for the formation of chiefdoms in Tamilakam synchronises with the emergence of the Tamil heroic literary tradition. The Ashokan edicts of the early 20 historic period  refer to the Tamil chiefdoms as the Ceras, Colas and Pandyas (Keralaputa, Coda and Pandya) apart from satiyaputa (Atiyaman) The allusions in the Tamil heroic literary compositions, Tamil brahmi label-inscriptions and Graeco-Roman geographers‘ (Ptolemy and Pliny) accounts would have us believe that the Tamil chiefdoms existed from the
second century B.C and lasted till the close of the third century A.D.
