Slopes are fundamental components of the Earth's surface and their evolution has long attracted the attention of geomorphologists. A slope develops through the interaction of weathering, mass wasting, fluvial erosion, climatic influences, lithology, and tectonic activity. Various geomorphologists have proposed different models to explain the evolution of slopes over time. The three most influential models are those of W. M. Davis, Walther Penck, and L. C. King. W. M. Davis proposed the model of slope decline as part of his geographical cycle. According to Davis, landforms evolve through the stages of youth, maturity, and old age following rapid uplift and prolonged erosion. As erosion progresses, valley sides become progressively gentler because the upper portions of the slope are worn down faster than the lower parts. Consequently, the angle of the slope continuously decreases with time.
