Continental drift is the theory proposed by the German meteorologist and geophysicist Alfred Wegener in 1912, which states that the continents were once united into a single supercontinent called Pangaea and gradually drifted apart to occupy their present positions. According to Wegener, around 300 million years ago, Pangaea was surrounded by a vast ocean known as Panthalassa. Later, Pangaea split into two major landmasses: Laurasia in the north and Gondwanaland in the south. These further fragmented and slowly moved across the Earth's surface, giving rise to the present continents.
