# Major Components of Designing and Executing a Social Science Research Project Social science research is a systematic process of investigating social realities, human behaviour, institutions, relationships and processes in order to generate reliable knowledge and understand social problems. In Development Studies, research is particularly important because development issues such as poverty, inequality, unemployment, gender discrimination, migration, health, education and livelihood are complex and influenced by economic, political, cultural and institutional factors. A well-designed research project therefore requires careful planning from the identification of the research problem to the collection, analysis and interpretation of data. The major components involved in designing and executing a social science research project are discussed below. The first component is the identification and formulation of the research problem. Research begins with a broad area of interest, which must be converted into a specific, manageable and researchable problem. The problem may emerge from existing theories, gaps in previous studies, social conditions, policy concerns or practical development challenges. For example, instead of studying the broad issue of rural poverty, a researcher may examine the impact of employment guarantee programmes on the livelihood security of rural households. A clearly formulated problem provides direction to the entire research process. The second component is a review of literature. The researcher systematically examines books, journal articles, research reports, government documents, policy papers, theses and other relevant sources. The literature review helps identify what is already known, what debates exist, what methods have previously been used and where gaps remain. It also prevents unnecessary duplication of research. In Development Studies, reviewing literature is especially important because development problems are often studied from different disciplinary perspectives such as economics, sociology, political science, anthropology and geography. The third component involves developing the conceptual and theoretical framework. A conceptual framework identifies the major concepts and variables relevant to the research and explains the expected relationships among them. A theoretical framework connects the study with existing theories.
