Discuss the Main services provided under Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS)

Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) is a flagship scheme of the Government of India that was launched in 1975 with the aim of improving the nutritional and health status of children in the age group of 0-6 years and reducing mortality, morbidity, and malnutrition among them. The program also aims to promote the cognitive, physical, and social development of children, empower women, and address gender inequalities.

The main services provided under ICDS are as follows:

1. Supplementary Nutrition: ICDS provides supplementary nutrition to children below 6 years of age, pregnant and lactating mothers, and adolescent girls. The supplementary nutrition includes hot cooked meals, take-home rations, and morning snacks, which are provided five days a week. The nutrition is provided according to the age, gender, and health status of the beneficiaries.

2. Immunization: ICDS provides immunization services to children below 6 years of age against seven vaccine-preventable diseases, namely, tuberculosis, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, poliomyelitis, measles, and hepatitis B.

3. Health Check-ups: ICDS provides regular health check-ups to children below 6 years of age, pregnant and lactating mothers, and adolescent girls. These check-ups include weight and height measurement, assessment of nutritional status, and screening for anemia and other illnesses. Referral services are provided for children who need specialized medical care.
