Cooperative legislation in India has evolved through a long historical process shaped by social needs, economic conditions and administrative reforms. The origin of cooperative law in India can be traced to the early twentieth century when rural indebtedness and exploitation of farmers created an urgent need for institutional credit. The first formal step was the enactment of the Cooperative Credit Societies Act, 1904 by the British Government.
