### Phase 1: Pre-independence Period (Pre-1947)

The roots of CSR in India can be traced back to the pre-independence era when industrialization was beginning to take shape. However, CSR during this time was not formally recognized as a distinct concept. Indian businesses were largely focused on establishing themselves in the colonial economy. Yet, certain industrialists such as Jamsetji Tata and G.D. Birla began to demonstrate social responsibility through their initiatives.

Jamsetji Tata, one of India's first industrialists, is often regarded as a pioneer of CSR in India. He laid the foundation for the Tata Group’s commitment to community development by establishing institutions such as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, setting up schools, hospitals, and providing aid during famines. His vision of integrating business success with societal welfare was a precursor to the modern-day CSR concept.

At the time, CSR initiatives were primarily voluntary and largely driven by individual entrepreneurs who felt a moral obligation to contribute to society.
