The Revolt of 1857, also known as the First War of Indian Independence, the Sepoy Mutiny, or the Great Rebellion, was a significant uprising against British rule in India. It began as a mutiny of sepoys (Indian soldiers) of the East India Company’s army but soon developed into a widespread rebellion that included civilian participation in several regions. The revolt was a result of cumulative grievances related to economic exploitation, political annexations, social reforms, and military discontent. The course of the revolt began with sporadic incidents before it took a more organized form. The immediate cause was the introduction of the new Enfield rifle. Its cartridges were rumored to be greased with cow and pig fat, which was offensive to both Hindu and Muslim soldiers. On March 29, 1857, Mangal Pandey, a sepoy at Barrackpore, attacked British officers, marking an early sign of unrest. Though he was executed, the resentment continued to grow. The revolt officially broke out on May 10, 1857, at Meerut, where sepoys refused to use the cartridges and were punished by the British. This provoked a violent reaction, and the sepoys killed their officers and marched to Delhi.
