Sustainable development seeks to balance economic growth, social equity and environmental protection so that the needs of the present are met without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Despite its acceptance as a guiding principle in policy and governance, achieving sustainable development remains deeply challenging. Environmental degradation, social inequalities, economic pressures and governance failures intersect in complex ways, making sustainability difficult to realize in practice.
