# Colonial Administration in North East India The colonial administration in North East India developed in a distinctive manner because of the region’s difficult terrain, ethnic diversity, tribal social institutions, and strategic location along the frontiers of British India. The British did not introduce a uniform administrative system throughout the region. Instead, they adopted different policies for the plains and the hills and frequently relied on indirect administration, political agents, chiefs, and customary institutions. The principal objective was to secure the frontier, control resources and trade routes, maintain political stability, and prevent rival powers from gaining influence. The expansion of British authority in North East India began particularly after the Treaty of Yandabo in 1826, following the First Anglo-Burmese War. Through this treaty, the British acquired control over Assam and gradually extended their influence over neighbouring territories. Assam became an important centre of British administration because of its economic resources, especially tea, oil, timber, and other forest products. The British reorganised Assam into districts and introduced administrative institutions modelled partly on those existing in other parts of British India. However, the hill areas were treated differently because the British considered them difficult to govern directly. In Assam, the British initially maintained existing political arrangements wherever convenient, but gradually established a more centralized administrative structure. The province was divided into districts under British officials, particularly Deputy Commissioners. These officials possessed extensive administrative, judicial, revenue, and police responsibilities. The Deputy Commissioner became the central figure in district administration and represented the authority of the colonial state. The British also established courts, police stations, revenue offices, and other administrative institutions.
