Discuss role of Community Media for Rural Development

Community media includes a variety of media aimed at community development. Initiatives are community-driven and mixed with alternative forms of media. It facilitates and helps to share the knowledge to ‘conscientize’ its members, which results in motivating the members of the community to take part in community development activities. Community media is not restricted to technological interventions but also exists in human and non-technological forms. Let us discuss the first examples of the non-technology based community media forms. These forms are organic and inclusive.

Theatre:-  Theatre is one of the older forms, where every community has a collective memory of performing together during festivals and other public events. Ramlila, Nautanki, Band Pather, Veedhi Natakam to mention a few. These forms are flexible and participation is voluntary, generation after generations keep performing for the community. Though there is no formal training, actors from the community learn from their peers. Street theatre is one of the newer forms of mostly urban students and progressive thinking communities in India.

Puppetry:-  Puppetry is one of the ancient arts of expression and entertainment. Puppetry has widely been used in development communication for sensitising masses on the issues of health, education, gender, environment, and social taboos. Sensitive and intimate issues of the community can be dealt with very effectively with the use of puppetry.

Community:-  Games Community games are culture-specific and inclusive. Celebration, sharing, relaxing, rapport building are some of the key elements which keep them survive over the years. Games are based on occasion, age and gender. The social activists, change workers improvising the game techniques to design games for development with locally relevant themes.
