The National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) was launched by the Indian Government in 2005 with the objective of improving the health status of people living in rural areas of the country. The mission is a flagship programme of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, aimed at strengthening the rural health infrastructure, providing accessible and affordable health services, and reducing the burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases.

The NRHM has been a game-changer for the rural healthcare system in India. It has brought about a paradigm shift in the approach towards healthcare in rural areas. The mission has two main components - one, providing basic health infrastructure, and the other, improving the quality of healthcare services. Under the first component, the mission aims to provide a health sub-centre for every population of 5000, a Primary Health Centre (PHC) for every population of 30,000, and a Community Health Centre (CHC) for every population of 1,20,000. The mission also aims to ensure that every sub-centre and PHC has adequate staff, infrastructure, and equipment.

Under the second component, the mission aims to improve the quality of healthcare services by enhancing the skills of healthcare providers, strengthening the referral system, and promoting community participation in healthcare. The mission also emphasizes the importance of preventive healthcare and encourages the adoption of healthy lifestyles.

One of the major achievements of the NRHM has been the reduction in the maternal mortality rate (MMR) and infant mortality rate (IMR) in rural areas. The mission has focused on improving maternal and child health by promoting institutional deliveries, providing antenatal care, and ensuring the availability of essential drugs and equipment. The mission has also strengthened the immunization programme, which has led to a significant reduction in the incidence of vaccine-preventable diseases.

The NRHM has also been successful in addressing the burden of communicable diseases in rural areas. The mission has focused on strengthening the surveillance and control of communicable diseases like tuberculosis, malaria, and dengue.
