### Consonant Sound Changes

#### 1. Consonant Cluster Simplification
Old and Middle English had many more consonant clusters (combinations of consonants in a row) than Modern English does. For example, in Old English, words like "hnata" (meaning "knot") featured a combination of consonants that is no longer found in standard English. Over time, certain consonants in clusters became dropped or simplified. This can be seen in the evolution of words like:

- "knight" (Old English: "cniht") — The "c" sound was dropped in many words, making it silent in Modern English.
- "gh" in words like "night" and "thought" (Old English: "niht," "thouht") — Over time, the "gh" sound became increasingly softer and eventually disappeared, leaving behind the "f" and "t" sounds in Modern English.

#### 2. Voicing and Unvoicing of Consonants
Another significant development was the voicing and unvoicing of consonants. In Old English, consonants like "b" and "p" were pronounced more distinctly than in Modern English. Over time, however, certain consonants began to undergo shifts in voicing depending on their position in a word or phrase.

- The voiced "th" sound [ð] (as in "this") was often replaced by the voiceless sound [θ] (as in "think").
- Similarly, initial consonant sounds in certain words began to undergo changes, with voiced stops like [b], [d], and [g] becoming voiceless (like [p], [t], and [k]) at the end of words or in some environments.
