A thermocouple is an electrical device used to measure temperature by exploiting the principle of thermoelectricity, specifically the Seebeck effect. This device consists of two different types of conductors (usually metals) joined at one end to form a junction. When this junction is heated or cooled, a voltage (known as the thermoelectric voltage) is generated, which is directly related to the temperature difference between the junction and the other ends of the conductors (known as the reference or cold junction).

### Principle of Operation

The fundamental operating principle of a thermocouple is based on the Seebeck effect, which states that when two dissimilar metals are connected to form a loop, and the loop is subjected to a temperature gradient, a voltage (electromotive force, EMF) is generated. This EMF is proportional to the temperature difference between the hot junction (where the metals are joined) and the cold junction (where the wires are connected to a measurement instrument).

The generated voltage, however, is quite small, on the order of microvolts per degree Celsius, making it necessary to use highly sensitive voltmeters or instrumentation amplifiers to detect and quantify the voltage. The thermoelectric voltage depends on the materials used for the thermocouple and can be used to determine the temperature difference between the hot and cold junctions.
